CONCEPT

The leading concept of creating this project is “Understanding”. To understand the trauma they have suffered during wartime; to understand that every soul and mind would need to be understood.

The reason I’d like to make this project is due to my travel experience in Europe. After learning some of the shattered memories my grandfather has shared with me before I went to Paris for study, as well as my presence on the deck of the ferry traveling from Port of Dover to Port de Calais — by looking at the two countries at the strait which separates them geographically and historically. I wondered if I could imagine, or understand what my grandfather had crossed in mind while stepping on the warship without knowing that was a farewell to his homeland. Therefore, I started to plan to document his, or their life stories. The most important thing I’d like to tell through this project is to make people understand the need of understanding our history, and the cruelty of war that we should never recreate such, but only to stay in a film.

I would try to recreate Grandfather’s point of view and his perception, however, the viewer’s personal, or subjective perspective is the most precious and unique result of this project. As it shall be a multi-user experience, I also would like to create this project into a co-work with the users/viewers/participants due to having the common memory of the great era our grandparents or parents had been through.
